| The sutra says: "Shariputra, if a good man or woman who hears of Amida holds fast to his Name even for one day, two days, three, for, five, six or seven days with a concentrated and undistracted mind, then, at the hour of death, Amida will appear with a host of holy ones. Consequently, when life comes to an end, the aspirant's mind will not fall into confusion and so hi will be born in the Land of Utmost Bliss of Amida Buddha." From between his eyebrows, Amida emits a golden ray of light, whick reaches a man and a woman to guide them to the Pure Land. On the roof and in mid-air are seen transformed bodies of Amida and a flying heavenly being. Inside the house a monk is chanting or explaining a sutra for the aspirants. Since Amida and the holy sages are coming to the living devotees, this scene can be interpreted as Amida's welcoming and protecting sincere followers even while they are alive. Even though they cannot see Amida because of their blind passions, his light shines on them continually. |
